Moira House Girls’ School is a day and boarding school with girls aged from two to eighteen. The school was founded in 1875 and is set within 15 acres of landscaped gardens on the Sussex coast.
We pride ourselves on our excellent pastoral care and careful attention to the needs of each individual and provide as many opportunities as possible for girls to develop their full potential within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Every girl is treated as an individual. The “family” atmosphere of the school helps to nurture confident and articulate students within a safe, attractive environment.
Girls at Moira House consistently achieve outstanding results at both GCSE and A level. What makes such results that much more remarkable is that Moira House is not selective. The school is just fortunate in attracting girls who combine enthusiasm with a determination to make the most of their talents. Work starts in the Junior School, where small classes enable each child to shine in one sphere or another – often several.
Moira House is not just about academic achievement. There is also emphasis on personal growth and pupils are encouraged to explore the huge range of educational opportunities and to discover individual strengths through an extensive programme of sporting, cultural and social activities.
Music of every kind is an integral aspect of life at the school. Girls can sing in choirs, play in the orchestra, swing band, participate in festivals, and prepare for graded examinations
Each year there is a plethora of performing opportunities, including concerts from within the school, in local venues and theatres as well as some amazing trips abroad. On a recent performing arts tour, girls relished the experience of performing in Dubai and in St Andrews Cathedral in Hong Kong. They are now looking forward to the tour to St Petersburg and Moscow in 2012.
Sport also plays a major part in life at Moira House and takes place on our own playing fields in our sports hall and heated pool. Beyond the timetable is a huge choice of individual and team sports. Everyone at all levels is encouraged to play a sport and the more gifted girls can compete at school as well as county and national level.
Science helps to prepare girls for careers they might not otherwise have considered. Field trips to the NASA space camp in Arizona help foster interest in aeronautical engineering, for example.
Boarding represents 25% of the school intake and attractive and comfortable accommodation is provided. Girls in Years 9 and 10 share double study bedrooms and girls in Year 11 share a study bedroom before moving into Boston, the Sixth Form House with individual study bedrooms.
Life in the Sixth Form is very different from life in the first five years at secondary school. Sixth Formers come to see their teachers as helpers and guides. The girls are afforded greater independence providing a stepping stone to university.
We believe that students work best in a happy, secure environment where our expectation is clear, where good work is recognised and where achievement is praised. We place great emphasis on relationships, encouraging students to relate well with each other and with staff. We believe that determination, commitment and hard work are the key to success.
Mission Statement
Moira House will provide an excellent all-round education which will encourage each individual pupil to attain her highest academic, artistic, musical, social, and sporting potential in a friendly, happy yet purposeful community, which is multi-cultural with a Christian foundation, in a safe and caring environment.
